“From Dog to Wolf: A Native American Story” by Delbert Sandlin has been released worldwide. This 192-page novel follows the teenage Daniel Graywolf, whose discovery of a strange stone creates an opportunity to challenge the US government and improve the dismal conditions of reservation life. More than a narrative alone, this novel paints a painfully accurate portrait of present-day reservation life, and explores the plight suffered by Native Americans for generations.

The author aims to provoke discussions and bring new awareness to the deplorable conditions imposed on Native American reservations, often ignored or denied by the American government, as well as pay tribute to his own Cherokee heritage. This provocative novel is a tale of both triumph and tragedy, and a call to action for the fair treatment of the First Americans.

From Dog to Wolf: A Native American Story (ISBN: 9781736841075) can be purchased through retailers worldwide, including barnesandnoble.com and Amazon. The paperback retails for $12.99. Wholesale orders are available through Ingram.

HOW DID THE FIRST AMERICANS END UP LAST IN AMERICA?

From Dog to Wolf is the story of Daniel Graywolf, an Oglala Lakota teen struggling to survive on the impoverished Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Shy and a loner, young Daniel escapes the drama of life there by wandering the creek beds and washed-out roads in search of specimens for his rock collection; a practice that has earned him the regrettable nickname “Rock Dog.” One day he meets Dr. Robert Timberland, a geology professor from the nearby university. Together they solve the mystery of an important find Daniel has made while searching ancestral lands near the reservation. With the help and wisdom of tribal elders, they devise a plan that brings about the long-deserved restitution for his Sioux ancestors. To succeed will require considerably more of Daniel than just human resolve.

About the author:

I grew up in Fresno, California, as the youngest in a family of five. My father, who was part Cherokee, was a successful doctor and cattle rancher. Whether he was embarrassed or ashamed of his ancestry, I will never know, as he never spoke of it, and I never met my paternal grandparents to ask. I went searching for that missing part of my family history and after four years of research discovered a story about our nation and its treatment of Native Americans that needs to be told. That story is From Dog to Wolf.
