Women’s Empowerment Influencer and Technology Founder Uses Social Media to Inspire a ‘New Life Away from Home’

With the worldwide pandemic in full effect, lockdowns shutting down the travel industry, and the rise of “remote-first” careers, Margarita Simonova is helping women around the world build a new life free of geographic restrictions. And with over 36k followers, it’s working.

For decades, in the corporate world, there’s been this idea of a “glass ceiling” where certain people would simply never ‘break through’ to the upper echelon of organizations because of their gender, race or socio-economic status.

All that is radically transforming now that the playing field has leveled, people are forced to work from home due to the pandemic, and a new meritocracy is evolving based on the value they bring. As such, new paths are opening and giving rise to a whole new segment of online professionals: women in tech.

“As we see, technology is transforming everything so quickly, but women are greatly under-represented and this needs to change,” says Simonova. “I am not quite sure how men have come to dominate the tech industry, but I’m on a mission to change that.”

According to ISEMAG, women make up about 47% of the total workforce yet women hold only 25% of tech jobs. And even more disparaging is that “more than two thirds of females do not consider a career in tech.”

But all this is changing, especially with the rise of social media because women can simply go to Instagram and see other women who are successfully making a career in the tech world, and get a direct view into everything including a behind-the-scenes-look at the day in the life of “women in tech.”

Simonova is leading the way by doing everything she can to inspire women that they can do it too.

Born in a small town in Russia, she long dreamed of moving to America and working in technology but had to overcome several barriers: her family wasn’t able to pay for US-based education, she didn’t speak English, there were no resources to learn tech skills, and no role-models who had successfully accomplished her dreams.

Fast forward to 2021 and she now runs a technology company, I Love My QA,  based in Vancouver, British Columbia with employees and clients all around the world. She documents her journey to her 36k Instagram followers as @margarita_travel and recently launched a Youtube channel helping Russian women understand how to move to Canada, land a remote job and the cost of living associated with this “new way of life.”

“It’s scary at first, the idea of moving to a new country, learning a new culture, new skills, a new industry, moving away from family and doing it all at the same time” says Simonova. “So I believe the first step is simply to show women it’s possible and that they can do it too. I started as a photographer in Russia and slowly over time developed some tech skills. It didn’t happen overnight but it’s never been more achievable than it is today.”

Indeed the statistics show that many companies that were forced into a remote-first structure as a result of the pandemic are opting to keep their staff at home. It saves on office expenses, allows employees to take care of loved ones at home and provides a greater level of flexibility.

As the world continues its transition to a tech-first reality, only time will tell how influencers like Simonova will be able to inspire a new generation of women to conquer their fears, fight the stigmas and build a successful career in the tech space.

But with the rise of social media and the ability to connect with millions of people around the world becomes ubiquitous, her dream of “inspiring women to live a new life” may become a reality faster than she even realizes, powered, appropriately, by technology itself.
