Fort Collins Periodontics and Dental Implants Reveals Signs of Periodontal Disease
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is more harmful to the human body than most people realize.

Fort Collins, CO – As a public service, Fort Collins Periodontics and Dental Implants clinic has recently announced ways for people to recognize that they may be in danger of losing their teeth due to periodontal disease.

The Fort Collins periodontist who works at Fort Collins Periodontics and Dental Implants feel it is important for Fort Collins residents to know the signs that periodontal disease is developing.

Red Gums

Healthy gums are pink in color.  If a patient notices that their gums are red, this is a red flag.  The gums may look swollen and may hurt when brushed. At this point, people should think seriously about seeing a periodontist in Fort Collins

Bleeding

Gums should not bleed when a person brushes their teeth and they should not bleed when flossing.  Sometimes, crunchy food will cause gums to bleed.  Bleeding is never normal.

Receding Gums

Sometimes people look at their teeth and notice that the teeth look longer than before. This illusion is caused by the gums receding or pulling back away from the base of the tooth.  Gums should not shrink away from the tooth.

Separated or Loose Teeth

If a tooth becomes loose in the jaw without any trauma, this is another red flag for periodontal disease.  Teeth should remain firmly anchored in the bone.  With periodontal disease, the gums are no longer holding the teeth into the bone.  Sometimes the loose tooth will move out of place, causing a separation between two teeth.  This is also bad because the food will get stuck between those two teeth causing tooth decay on top of periodontal disease.
