The ABC of diversity and intercultural competence for health professionals.

Nigerian German health and intercultural expert Chris Ifeanyi Ezeh has just released an excellent book for all health and allied social-services professionals. The author´s latest book, Intercultural Competence for Medical Professionals: Ultimate Diversity & Cultural Guide for Healthcare Professionals, highlights the most experienced health and intercultural issues by practitioners associated with migration, diversity and cultural competence.

Health and intercultural expert Chris Ifeanyi Ezeh has just published an excellent book for all health and social care specialists. The author’s latest book, “Intercultural Competence for Medical Professionals” highlights the cultural influences and challenges most healthcare professionals face when dealing with immigrants, diversity and cultural competence.

In a recent press conference, Mr Ezeh asked, “As a healthcare professional, do you know what cultural practices may endanger the health of your patients from other cultures? Do you have the competence to face the intercultural health problems of such patients with foreign backgrounds?  If you work in the health professions today, you need broad-based intercultural competence to care for and treat patients appropriately, bearing in mind their cultural habits. Furthermore, many other influences are essential for improved integration of people with an immigration background, e.g.: ‘language courses that are not combined with Expert-intercultural training are useless’ because ‘integration requires not only the ability to speak the language of the host country but above all the ability to understand its culture fluently’.

In the author’s words, “globalisation and the explosion of technology have brought the world together more than ever. Likewise, political turmoils, North/South economic dichotomy and international migration have brought and are still bringing together people from different parts of the world with different cultures with serious social, medical and intercultural health consequences“.

The effects of globalisation and migration, now seen in multicultural societal makeup, are beginning to affect healthcare practices in several ways. If adequate professional measures are not put in place by health decision-makers,  the result could be wrong medical diagnosis, discrimination, misunderstanding, frustration, and intercultural conflicts. Such intercultural miscommunication could sometimes lead to a patient’s death. How can medical professionals maintain professional standards and be fair to every patient? How can globalisation and migration affect healthcare practices in multicultural societies? These and more are the key questions answered extensively in this over 500-page ultimate guide.

The book author, Chris Ifeanyi Ezeh, is a German journalist, communication coach, trainer, intercultural health & nutritional expert with roots in Nigeria. He has over 30 years of experience in the European health industry. His interests in health and nutrition were cradled in his childhood.

Chris is a Mass Communication graduate and a certified healthcare expert in Paraplegiology. He never relented from his passion for health awareness. Chris’s passion for seeing Africans (at home and in the diaspora) eat correctly and understand the beneficial aspects of old African nutrition motivated him to write his first book, African healthy food secrets. Intercultural Competence for Medical Professionals is his latest book.

In the book, Chris explores the role of adherence and compliance, the application of cultural competence in medical healthcare and our daily lifestyles. If you desire to understand what different cultures think of diseases, and the cultures and practices of patients and medical staff alike, then you should read this book.

Chris makes the book as practical as can be with several case studies. The questions in the text and their practicality make it suitable for medical practitioners, great for social science students and graduates, and comprehensibly accessible to non-professionals.

Dr A. Petersen, a medical practitioner in North Germany, noted: “This new book is indeed comprehensive and contains helpful documentation and painstakingly illustrates everything you need as a medical professional to succeed in a multicultural setting. It highlights, with the best examples, the needed must-have skills for nurses, medical, and paramedical professionals: mental health, effective communication, ambiguity tolerance, pain, and nutrition management. I will recommend it for my staff and patients alike”.

Intercultural Competence for Medical Professionals: Ultimate Diversity & Cultural Guide for Healthcare Professionals is available in German and English on Amazon. It also has a kindle edition, hardcover, or paperback versions.
