How This 17-Year-Old Scientist Is Pushing For Fracking Education

Sitting in his room, Anish Kataria, a high school junior from Dublin High School can be found debating competitively and playing Tetris. Yet, when not enjoying life as a normal teenager, Anish is the founder and creator of What the Frack, an organization focused on environmental engineering in the context of fracking developments. What the Frack focuses on teaching students about the scientific and historical sectors of the fracking industry, hoping to encourage environmental action and increased involvement in the world of environmental engineering. With over 100 thousand listens on the What the Frack audiobook and more than 10 thousand students on the What the Frack platform, Anish has been a pioneer in helping youth become more conscious and educated, all using online tools and marketing strategies.

When asked for his inspiration, Anish elaborates: “I’ve been interested in the environment since I was 6 years old. I was an activist for reduced plastic as young as 10 years old, so the progression to creating my organization was expected”. What the Frack has gone through multiple stages of iteration, starting as an environmental technology education startup and slowly becoming a fracking education platform, the first of its kind according to Anish. Students as young as 7 and as old as 65 have gone through the program designed by the organization, with an average satisfaction rating of 4.8 on a 5.0 scale. The key differentiator? A lack of bias.

“It was extremely important for us to present a fair evaluation of the fracking industry, not taking either side of the coin as we knew that would polarize us. I’m a competitive debater, so I know better than anyone else that true education comes from challenging perspectives, and we accomplished that by doing our due diligence in our research.”

What the Frack takes no shortcuts in being non-partisan, including the scientific downfalls and accomplishments of the industry and what next steps are being presented by politicians. The international appeal of the platform and audiobook have also led to international support, mainly from countries in South America and Europe.

So, what’s next for What the Frack? With plans to expand its online program and start conducting its research programs, Anish is looking forward to helping inspire more students and break the ice on conversations about the environment.

Anish makes his stance clear: “Education is the easiest step to helping create change for our students.”
