Wilda Silva, Secret Keeper is an illustrated fantasy novel about a talented eleven-year old red headed girl who plays the flute and piccolo. She moves to a small town in the Pacific Northwest that is the gateway to the international world of fairies. These fairies take an interest in her talent for magical reasons. Wilda finds a fairy relic while playing her piccolo in the woods one day, setting off a chain of events that impacts the fate of a fairy kingdom and its long-lost ruler.

Informed by fairy folklore from all over the world, Fay people from nearly every continent are represented in this multicultural novel. Aziza Fairies from Benin, Africa appear in this novel as well as Fairies from Mongolian and Filipino cultures, and Elves from Scandinavian and Australian indigenous cultures. There are also water sprites from Native American folkloric traditions.

This is a fantasy story for today. It is grounded in the reality of being a working-class child of a single mother who struggles with alcoholism. This age-appropriate story provides insight into how a child can handle this situation, how a child can determine which secrets to tell, and how adults should handle addiction.

Young musicians will appreciate Wilda Silva as someone who shares their passion for music. Wilda is a role model whose musical ability is the result of her hard work, dedication, and willingness to make mistakes. Wilda is a projector of chromesthesia. This is a form of synesthesia that causes a person to see colors when she hears sounds.

Wilda struggles to fit in at her new school. She learns to cope with frustration and loneliness through music. Twin sisters Monica and Veronica Chaichana are the most popular girls at school. The sisters are of Thai descent and they factor in Wilda’s life as she tries to navigate her relationship with them. Avery Jones, a goodie-two-shoes hall monitor of African American descent, becomes Wilda’s ally.

This is the debut novel for A. A. Jeffery, an African American attorney and educator who has lived in the Puget Sound and San Francisco Bay areas. This novel was illustrated by Nassima Amir, a professional artist from New Caledonia, who is based in Vilnius, Lithuania.
