New Research Suggests OTC Catalase Enzyme for CORONAVIRUS

New studies have found that Catalase, a naturally-occurring enzyme currently sold as an over-the-counter dietary supplement, serves as “potential treatment for COVID-19.”

“The research available seems promising – but you need to ensure that the product you’re purchasing is effective.” – Cathy Beggan, founder of Rise-N-Shine.

A breakthrough study from UCLA and Beijing University has found that catalase can suppress the replication of the coronavirus in rhesus monkeys and dampen the inflammatory response that occurs in COVID-19 cases.

“There is a lot of focus on vaccines and antiviral drugs, and rightly so,” said Yunfeng Lu, a senior author on the study and professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering. “In the meantime, our research suggests this enzyme could offer a very effective therapeutic solution for treatment of hyperinflammation that occurs due to SARS-CoV-2 virus, as well as hyperinflammation generally.”

Lu and his team have reported that catalase, an antioxidant enzyme that naturally occurs in the body but significantly decreases with age, can effectively breakdown hydrogen peroxide within the body and minimize the excess production of the downstream reactive oxygen species that results from the infection and inflammatory process.

This was proven throughout three tests his team conducted, each on a different symptom of COVID-19. First, they tested the anti-inflammatory effects of catalase and its ability to regulate the production of cytokines – a protein that signals the immune system to attack the body’s own cells when made in excess, resulting in a “cytokine storm” that has been reported in patients diagnosed with COVID-19. Second, they found that catalase can defend against oxidation damage by protecting alveolar cells, which line the human lungs. Lastly, researchers found that catalase can repress the replication of SARS-CoV-2 in rhesus macaques (a type of monkey) without noticeable toxicity or damages.

“This work has far-reaching implications beyond the treatment of COVID-19,” says Dr. Gregory Fishbein, an author on the study and pathologist at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, since “a cytokine storm is a lethal condition that can complicate other infections, such as influenza, as well as non-infectious conditions, like autoimmune disease.”

However, before you run to stores to grab it, it’s important to note the encapsulation process when considering its effectiveness within the body. Cathy Beggan, founder of Rise-N-Shine, warns that not all single-ingredient catalase products maintain gastric survivability to ensure the enzyme makes it to your gut. Beggan warns that if taken without supplementary ingredients, the catalase capsules must be acid-resistant to warrant maximum potency.

Beggan currently sells the largest amount of acid-resistant Catalase on the market, Catalase 15,000 for $29.99. She states that her “sales have significantly increased since these findings have been published” and that “the research looks very promising – but you need to ensure that the product you’re taking is effective.” While she initially sought out catalase for its link to graying hair, she is excited with the news of these findings.
