xsign celebrates twenty years in the sign-making industry as an independently incorporated business, as of 1 January 2020. Established in 2000, the company has been at the forefront of significant advances in printing techniques, signage design and brand development, evolving from its Danish roots under the dline umbrella.

xsign has its origins in Danish architectural ironmongery, dline. The dline brand established itself as a market leader in modern, innovative interior design products. Showcasing the works of the Danish architectural designer Knud Holscher, dline quickly grew as a company for high quality architectural fittings. dline’s success and global brand recognition led to an expansion into other markets. British Architect, Mark Shaw-Smith, developed a number of dline’s products and later recognised the opportunity for dline in the signage industry. Mark registered dline UK ltd as a separate entity to focus on the growing market of architectural signage and to develop a range of signage systems.

The market opportunity for architectural signage in the UK and across the world was significant and through evolution of the brand, dline UK ltd became dlinexsign ltd, which today remains the name of the registered company. In later years, the company would drop dline from its trading name, to be simply know as xsign. xsign focused on industrial, business and academic sectors and were able to offer a full turnkey solution to deliver signage and environmental graphic projects into the offices, schools, universities and residential developments. The key driver for of the company was to create design-led solutions that were informative and durable.

Innovation in signage design has led to the creation of many patented signage technologies for the company. The jigsaw design concept, which allows for a multitude of sign materials to be used on a bespoke fixing system, was one of the first and original signage systems developed. Jigsaw provides end users with the ability to amend the signage scheme with relative ease, by using a series of panels, for ultimate flexibility. The jigsaw sign system was built around standard sizes, but with a range of possible materials that enhance the multi-layer design intent. This development alongside the original classic dline sign series has widened the product portfolio alongside other innovations such as anti-microbial signs, electronics, super-graphics, and the many unique text application technologies including the latest, Nitron Metallix. xsign, and CEO and Architect Mark Shaw-Smith, are continually looking for innovative ways to improve user interaction with wayfinding in the built environment. Today, the company has the lockable puzzle sign system, folio and talky in its product range.

Mark has steered the company through its transition from market entry to market leader. Today, the company has distinct functions and an advisory board. Separate teams are responsible for sales and marketing, design, operations, project management, production and installation. The company operates in over forty countries and Mark has a distinct vision of where he wants the company to be. “Our goal is to make signage an integral part of architectural design itself. We can help turn design concepts into beautiful and innovative signs that can be reliably manufactured and supplied over the long term”, he said. He sees the company as becoming an essential part of the architectural process, with signage being considered at the very beginning to ensure that it is appropriate and fit for purpose, while having all the design attributes that an Architect would expect from a sign.

For twenty years the company has been expanding into new markets, adopting new working methods, and developing innovative new techniques in signage design and manufacture.
