Kerendian, Avi was awarded the 2020 Non-Profit Professional of the Year award for his contributions and advocacy on behalf of underserved populations through GGHTx. Avi’s dedicated leadership of a strong and diverse association of volunteers is credited to his ability to bring together the strengths of a diverse set of backgrounds and engage others to influence maximum impact within the healthcare solutions space.

When we look around our world, we see the incredible work of countless people seeking to make a difference, be it education, saving the environment, feeding the poor, etc., and we are simply filled with awe. Clearly there are many with talent, ingenuity and a burning passion dedicated to improving the environment around them. “Avi Kerendian is a nonprofit contributor and fierce advocate for ensuring global health rights for people in underserved communities. His dedicated leadership of a strong and diverse association of volunteers is credited to his ability to bring together the strengths of a diverse set of backgrounds and engage others to influence maximum impact within the healthcare solutions space.”

For more than three years, Avi has been advocating for equity in access to health care and paving a new path to support people from underserved communities seeking their right to public health. After graduating with a double bachelor’s degree in Spanish and Biology from University, Avi successfully navigated the nonprofit landscape by co-founding GGHTx, a non-governmental community organization active in several countries. Under Avi’s leadership, GGHTx has helped provide emergency medical and dental assistance and support to more than 10,000 indigenous women and children, in nearly 40 villages, with Avi coordinating all the logistical details, from volunteer orientation to installation of medical centers with local partners.

Taking advantage of her contacts in the healthcare world, Avi had left Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, NY where she was working as a cancer research assistant to launch GGHTx, with the help of his partner, Dr. Arash Hakhamian.

In today’s environment with coronavirus and travel restrictions, the powerful duo have worked twice as hard to keep up with the unmet demand in changing lives. Together, with the help of countless volunteers and support staff, they have started a Dentulu-sponsored telehealth initiative to provide tens of thousands of free intraoral cameras in underserved towns that will provide immediate support to global health through telehealth means.

This GGHTx initiative, which is set up to connect clinical volunteers at care centers in Latin America and Uganda with physicians at healthcare facilities in the United States, is helping medical professionals collaborate remotely on examination, diagnostic and procedural care plans that are in the best interests of the patients involved. The intraoral camera, produced by Dentulu, acts as an educational tool for patients to offer a “dentist’s view” of their mouth. These FDA cleared oral cameras provide a quick and informative way for physicians to view patients’ teeth, gums, and other oral structures that can help improve oral health.

Unsurprisingly, the Dentulu and GGHTx is already succeeding within its telehealth platform, having assisted in supporting 1,000 women and children, all of whom would not have been treated were it not for the implementation of such a telehealth agreement. These patients are seeing their lives and health changed with comprehensive and successful care as a result of Avi Kerendian’s leadership and initiative.

Avi Kerendian credits his own mentors and teachers for her personal and professional success, but says that in community work “I learned to give, not because I have a lot; but rather because I know exactly what it feels like to have nothing. ”Shaping his vision, the leader of a global health nonprofit organization plans to one day pursue a legal career in which he can harness the international facets of law to help influence larger-scale impact in different communities around the world.
