Never Waste a Crisis - How a Group Transportation Company is Switching Gears During COVID-19
A pandemic isn’t an event companies strategize for, especially not startups just finding their groove. Swoop navigated the uncertainty and used the demand slump to focus on what the industry really needs. Let’s discuss how Swoop switched gears to keep moving forward and continue growing.

As you’re well aware, COVID-19 has impacted small businesses here in LA and across the globe. A pandemic isn’t an event companies typically strategize for, especially startups who are just finding their groove. Swoop has been able to navigate the uncertainty and use the demand slump to focus on what the industry really needs. Let’s discuss how Swoop has switched gears to keep moving forward and continue growing.

Get in where you fit in

At Swoop we realized being able to solve problems is nowhere near as important as being able to pick the right problems to solve. Being a group transportation platform, our primary issue became the decline of group adventures and events. As the concerns around COVID-19 grew, scheduled rides were refunded, the daily influx of requests evaporated, and (luckily) future trips were postponed to 2021. It became apparent the problem to solve was bigger than just us. Even with the inevitable loss of sales, we realized Swoop was still capable of giving back to the community that gave us a jumpstart in our early days as a company. We transitioned to offering rides at low cost for essential workers while also partnering with local businesses to transport primary healthcare items. While leaving the majority of the workload up to the companies with delivery expertise, Swoop has made ourselves available to help instead of trying to penetrate a market that is already efficiently served. We believe the relationships made throughout this journey have much more significance than dollars earned.

Don’t mistake motion for progress

One of the most deceiving gifts of COVID-19 is time. Using this time as a moment of reflection while in unison with the rest of the world can be highly advantageous for the future of the company. At Swoop we’ve utilized this juncture to take a step back from fulfilling daily requests and decided to get back in the lab. We gathered all of our knowledge within the company and asked ourselves what the group transportation industry was missing, which problems needed to be solved and how can we put our unique fingerprint on its future. After extensive market research and interviews with fleet operators, we realized the demand for a better way to manage their business and daily operations was evident. We decided to develop software for vehicle operators that is built with Swoop’s technology and is synonymous to our brand identity. This will create a better environment for transportation companies of all sizes to communicate with each other and their customers under the same roof, making operations more efficient while increasing their profit margins at the same time.

Minor setback for a major comeback

It’s impossible to forecast your company’s roadmap perfectly. Detours are imminent, but in retrospect, they can be the moments that define your business. Our goal at Swoop was to create a vehicle booking experience for customers that was seamless, accessible, and enjoyable. It took a couple of years of trials and tribulations mixed with a global pandemic for our check engine light to come on. We realized in order to create the most effective product we needed to build for the vehicle operators as well. As demand for group transportation evaporated it led us on a mission to fill the holes within our industry. We’re excited to produce a tool that will increase business for vehicle operators coming out of an unprecedented moment in time.
