STEM is at the forefront of education in the Ogden School District, with multiple programs and different curriculum being offered to ensure students get relevant experience and education. Through the STEM programs in the district, students can gain hands-on experience solving real-world problems with real solutions. One of the students in the Ogden School District expressed how much he loves the STEM programs stating, “This is the best way to learn because I get to build things and learn how to be an engineer! I know I have to be really good to go to this school.”

A great example of the STEM opportunities in the Ogden School District are the programs at New Bridge Elementary School, the only State Designated Platinum STEM Elementary School in Weber County. New Bridge Elementary has incorporated STEM through becoming a Project Lead the Way (PLTW) school. Project Lead the Way is a non-profit organization that teams up with schools to implement effective science, technology, math, and engineering programs. One project New Bridge Students were able to participate in was the planning and creation of effective water filters for third world populations to prevent disease and improve health. Students used recycled water bottles and 3D printers to create the filters, engaging their creative skills while helping to reduce waste. This is just one of the ways students were able to solve real-world problems in the program.

Students and teachers alike, recognize the benefits of STEM, teacher Michael Docksey said,“STEM education provides elementary learners not only with the knowledge to be successful but also with the experiences necessary to collaborate and work with others to identify problems and seek solutions. A STEM education is an opportunity to be prepared for the global learning and workplaces of today and deep into the 21st Century.”

Ogden School District also offers other opportunities for students to develop STEM skills through coding classes, an environmental science program, and space-based science through Astro Camp. Through coding classes, students can get hands-on experience curating a life-long skill with the assistance of well-trained teachers. The environmental science program allows students to participate in project-based learning and explore science themes with an environmental emphasis. At Astro Camp Utah, students participate in different science-based and space simulation projects. Ogden School District provides all of these opportunities to help prepare students for an ever-evolving world of technology.
