How One Dental Clinic is Busting Myths over Root Canal Treatment

The Canadian Dental Association rightly points out that taking good care of teeth and gums is a lifelong commitment. Thorough cleaning at least twice a day, together with visits to the dentist and hygienist to stay on top of any emerging issues, is a guaranteed way of maintaining good oral health and preventing problems developing in areas of the gums such as root canals.

However, this is not to say that root canal treatment is in itself problematic. Both the Canadian Academy of Endodontics and the Canadian Cancer Society have taken steps to issue statements clarifying what root canal treatment really is, in the face of scaremongering rumours about the nature of the treatment and what it can supposedly lead to. This runs the risk of preventing fearful patients from undergoing root canal treatment, which can then go on to cause tooth loss and worsening gum disease.

What is root canal treatment?

“Treatment of root canals is usually required following the infection of the nerve of a tooth, which if left untreated can then lead to extraction of the tooth,” says a spokesperson for Toronto-based Osmin Denture Clinic.

“The procedure sees the dentist remove pulp from the tooth that is either dead or injured, or which has become infected, which then allows the thorough cleaning and disinfecting of the root canal system. This is the system that contains the nerves and blood vessels – and once cleaned, the dentist will fill it with a synthetic material. This prevents later problems with cavities and teeth needing to be removed.”

The early signs that root canal treatment might be required are extreme tooth pain when chewing food or when the tooth is pressured; hot or cold drinks make the tooth feel sensitive; the tooth has become discoloured; or when gums nearby become swollen and inflamed. Despite common conceptions that root canal treatments are severely painful, an experienced dentist using local anaesthetic can perform this procedure with only minimal discomfort to the patient.

How popular and risky is root canal treatment?

Forecasts estimate the value of the global root canal market as reaching US$21 billion by 2023, with 41,000 treatments a day carried out in the US alone, according to the American Association of Endodontists. Both Canada and the US are recognized as world leaders in the field and have significant market share.

Root canal treatment does have its risks, with dentolegal experts listing these as treating the wrong tooth through an initial misdiagnosis; the development of pulpitis following a deep restoration; and the need to fully restore the tooth after treatment. During the procedure itself, problems have previously arisen with broken instruments, a failure to warn the patient about the potential for failed treatment, and overfilling and underfilling.

Preventing root canal treatment

Although the procedure is generally harmless and can be expertly performed by the best specialists, the general public can take steps to avoid the need for treatment of root canals in the first place. Osmin Denture Clinic carries out a professional teeth cleaning service and recommends this every three months; their team of oral health specialists focuses on the removal of plaque, tartar and stains from both teeth and gums.
